Biography

My work originates from a classical fine-brush figure and landscape painting tradition. This style that is has been a signature of my work for many years, although there are so many categories and genres of art now if I was to say which category my work belongs, I would create a new genre and call it Dimensional Art. Visual perception operates on many planes. We see, not necessary through, but in conjunction with what we are focused on. You wouldn't look at a leaf without being aware of the tree or even the mountain that is behind you. When I paint I always keep this in mind with the power of suggestion. As an artist I work on being able to see behind something or round something to give the illusion of reality, not as in a photograph, a photograph is 2 dimensional, my focus is to create a figure or a pillar that appears to stand out or walk out of the canvas. My latest work is a celebration of the human figure in an outdoor environment, and it is a testament of my love of nature and the spiritual experience it inspires in me. The whole process of creating art from conception to the final glaze is the tranquility of pure contemplation for me. Through art my world is beautiful and removed from the struggle of existence and the world as idea and inspiration can become manifest influenced by nature and my experiences in real life. My art is constantly changing in the same way my knowledge of materials and mediums have evolved over the years. Learning how to create form, texture and depth with color, I take my time with each piece of work to explore the hidden depths of a painting and how a piece can evolve from 2 dimensions to 3 dimensions. Although having explored Acrylics and painting with dyes on silk, the medium of my choice is oils, mainly on canvas, and now exploring painting on wood. As an anthropologist I endeavour to merge a sense of culture and symbolism into realism. I am self taught exploring different methods to achieve a desired result. Each piece of work is a journey in itself, a piece of work completed in Petra titled “The Treasury” is a painting of stone art created more than 2000 years ago. To create this piece of work I lived with the Bedouin in the caves of Petra, riding on my camel each day, battling with the dust and elements around me, chatting to passers by and friends about the meaning of life. This is my journey, as each layer after layer emerges on the canvas, so the journey unfolds in real life.
