I started oil painting at the age of 10, being taught by my father, who was a fine artist and art-restorer. I went on to study art at A Level but didn't pursue further formal study.
However, I continued to learn from my father; in particular the oil painting techniques of the Old Masters. Everything from the correct preparation of stretched canvas, to working up in layers, glazing and scumbling, etc.
With my artistic passions laying dormant I began to paint again only recently as a result of the sudden death of my father. I inherited his wonder art materials and felt the need to pick up the brushes once again.
Today I paint mostly landscapes, especially the big Norfolk skies of my home county. My style could be described as 'Tonal Realism' although some works do extend to more abstract composition and painting.
My aim in every artwork is to capture a feeling of light, a moment of connection with the natural world. I want to express the sensation of experiencing the elements in all forms and how this feels deep inside each of us.
My chosen medium is oil paint. This gives me intense colours, subtle hues and wonderful tonal control and effect. I use a range of professional oil paints including Winsor & Newton, as well as Sennelier of Paris.
My artworks range in sizes, although I prefer painting larger, with canvases anything between 30" x 20" up to 48" x 36" or even bigger. For larger commissions I also prepare the canvas by hand. In particular I love to create my canvases in fine Irish Linen and prepare these to a traditional method and true archival standards.
I've been delighted to sell paintings to collectors, and commissioning clients, in the UK and Middle East.
